Inside Breaking Bad: The Look of Superlab

A friend recently told me about the AMC series, “Breaking Bad,” and shared this really cool clip with the show’s Director of Photography, Michael Slovis, as he breaks down one of scenes from an episode. I enjoyed watching this because I love to hear the decisions DPs and cinematographers make as they aim to evoke certain feelings, set tones and moods, and create images which are visually engaging.

What They Don’t Teach You at Film School – Excerpt #2

Here’s excerpt two of “What They Don’t Teach You at Film School.” This one touches on finding vulnerability and empathy in yourself and translating that into your work to connect to your audience. I believe that this is one of the most important skill sets to have and to remember when you’re writing a script, looking for that certain angle, or grading to elicit that special feeling.

“What They Don’t Teach You at Film School” by Camille Landau and Tiare White

Yesterday, I came across some interesting books while spending time at a thrift store: the screenplay to ‘Pulp Fiction,’ ‘Marilyn: A Biography by Norman Mailer‘ (which has such amazing photographs), ‘Photography and Language‘ by San Francisco’s Camerawork Press (with photos from the 1930s-1970s) and the book mentioned in the title of this post, “What They Don’t Teach You at Film School.”

Best ISO Settings For Canon T2i (Tested on the 60D)

As someone who is still learning what ISO, aperture and shutter speed to use in various condition settings, I came across this guide that helps narrow down some of the best ISO settings to use when shooting. Tested on a 60D, these ISO setting suggestions also translates to the T2i, T3i and 7D, all of which use the same APS-C sensor.

New Technicolor Profile for Canon HD DSLRs (Including the T2i!)

I remember the first time that I learned about picture styles. I stumbled across a Vimeo tutorial featuring the Superflat style and how shooting in neutral tones opened up a world of possibilities when color correcting. Often relying on Superflat and Marvel’s Cine during shoots, I was extremely excited to learn about the collaboration between Technicolor and Canon and their resulting Technicolor Cinestyle, which is being heralded as possibly the best “picture style” for use with Canon HD DSLRs. Although designed specifically for the Canon 5DMKII, folks out there have already tested in on the T2i and are sharing their results.

This definitely looks like a tool that is going to very useful for DSLR shooters.

Gaze Locations of 11 Viewers Watching ‘There Will Be Blood’

A friend passed along this really cool article written by the folks over at mental_floss.

During my undergrad years, I took a course in Perception and learned about technique called ‘eyetracking,’ where infrared cameras are used to track the movement of a viewer’s pupil as they look at something. In our case we examined photos, but as you’ll see with the following video, The Diem Project, has applied this technology to viewers looking at film.

Canon Announces the Canon Rebel T3i/EOS 600D

According to Digital Photography Review:

“Canon has unveiled the Rebel T3i (EOS 600D) upper entry-level DSLR. It continues to use the 18MP CMOS sensor seen in the Rebel T2i (550D) but gains a tilt and swivel 1,040k dot LCD monitor like the one offered on the more expensive 60D. It also gains the ability to remotely control flashguns using its internal flash, a feature previously only featured on higher-end models. Alongside the camera, Canon is also launching the 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II, a cosmetically revised version of its optically stabilized kit lens. We’ve had a chance to use pre-production versions of both and have prepared a Hands-On Preview of the EOS 600D including beta samples gallery.”

Click here to learn more and be sure to check out their Hands-On Preview.  Follow the jump-cut to learn what I think is valuable for DSLR filmmakers to know how the T3i stacks up against the T2i and the 60D.
